Global Water Security Center

Providing decision makers with the most reliable, ground-breaking research, applied scientific techniques, and best practices so that the hydrologic cycle and its potential impacts can be put in a context for appropriate action and response by the United States

Catch us at the 2024 AGU Annual Meeting!

It’s that time of year again! The leaves have changed, temperatures are getting cooler, you might have switched your summer desk beverage for a cozy cup of tea. Of course, one of our favorite parts about this time of year is attending the American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting.

Three of us here at the Global Water Security Center (GWSC) will be at AGU this year. Dr. Kate Brauman, our deputy director, will be a ubiquitous presence at the meeting. She is chairing two sessions, participating in a panel on translating research for policy makers in water security, and presenting a poster on the Pathways to Impact Framework developed here at GWSC. Dr. Kaitlin Kimmel-Hass, an environmental data scientist, will be giving an oral presentation on how she weaves together climate data and storytelling to make it all more digestible to decision makers. Lastly, Dr. Erin Menzies Pluer will be giving an oral presentation on how GWSC used these approaches to answer questions swirling about drought at the Panama Canal last fall.

Where will GWSC be at the AGU Annual Meeting?

Tuesday, December 10

8:30 to 12:20: Kate is presenting a poster titled Guiding qualitative and quantitative assessment of the human impacts of weather, water, and climate using the Pathways to Impact Framework in the conference poster hall.

Wednesday, December 11

8:30 to 10:00: Session Title: Earth System Predictability Across Timescales for Climate Security: Grand Challenges and Recent Advancements, Salon G

  • Kate Brauman is chairing this session, so she will be there, too!

Thursday, December 12

10:20 to 11:50: Kate is chairing a session titled Building Community Cooperation in Developing and Sharing Science Applications for National Security, Natural Hazards Preparedness and Response, and Public Safety, located in Independence D in the Marriott Marquis.

2:10 to 3:40: Kate is a panelist in a session titled From Water Science to Water Action: Translating Research and Development to Policy-Relevant Implementations for Water Security in the conference center Ballroom A.

If you are planning to be at AGU and would like to grab a cup of coffee to chat and hear more about our work, please feel free to reach out. Safe travels, and see you soon!
